Book Cover Design

Bram Stoker's Dracula

This project is from a graphic design class that I took at Pierce College. We redesigned book covers and spines for books of our choosing.

Software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Procreate

Concept

I selected Bram Stoker’s Dracula because it is a masterpiece of gothic horror. Dracula provides ample opportunities for creativity and experimentation. Its gothic setting and eerie atmosphere lend themselves to striking visuals and bold typography. The iconic imagery associated with Dracula, such as bats, wolves, and coffins, also provides a wealth of visual motifs to draw upon.

Mood Board

Process

  1. I created a mood board using Adobe Photoshop to find inspiration for the project using book covers of the same genre as well as pieces of gothic design.
  2. I created a series of six sketches using Procreate with the theme and aesthetics in mind. I chose to feature bats, blood, and the moon as they are all prominent details in the novel.
  3. I refined five of the sketches into mid-fi mock-ups using Adobe Illustrator and sought feedback to decide on the most effective features.
  4. I combined the best features of several covers to create a final cover using Illustrator.
  5. I designed the back cover and spine to mirror the same style as the front and back covers using Illustrator.
